Elevator systems for hoisting passengers or freight between floors of a building have been widely installed. The elevator systems usually include a plurality of elevator cars, each car being provided with a car door that opens to permit passengers and/or freight to be loaded and unloaded from the car. The car speed in the case of an elevator system is generally controlled by the door opening, or car speed, control. In the case of a passenger elevator system, this control is usually applied to the closure of the car door by means of a door controller, which opens the door when the car reaches the floor selected by the elevator system. In the case of a freight elevator system, the control determines the time required for the door to be open, from the time the car reaches the floor until the door is closed, and determines the speed at which the door should close. A typical example of a prior art freight elevator door controller is disclosed in U.S. Pat. No. 3,960,882. Typically, freight elevator systems control the speed at which the car door closes by comparing the time required for the car door to be open from the time the car reaches the floor until the door is closed, with a set reference value. This reference value is referred to as the time constant. The greater the value of this time constant, the longer the door will be open from the time the car reaches the floor until the door is closed. When the car door is closed, the door controller performs a time delay, which is longer than the time constant, to prevent the door from being opened until the car has completely stopped and the car speed is zero. By way of example, a time constant of 1 second and a time delay of 4 seconds would result in a 30 second door open time. Thus, the door controller does not open the door for a time period longer than 30 seconds from the time the car reaches the floor until the car completely stops. This time delay is necessary to prevent the door from opening while the car is accelerating to a higher floor. If the car is in a free state, the door will not open
